If you want to pursue a career in data science, it is a good idea to start your preparation early. While many courses will teach you the basics of data science, you will get a sense of detail when you start learning the subject right after your twelfth standard. The two options you can choose for studying data science after school are the following:

  • As a subject in one of the main courses of your choice (for example, math, science, statistics, engineering, business & finance and more)
  • As a standalone course (like a bachelor’s or master’s in data science)

Eligibility criteria to study data science after 12th

If you are interested in pursuing a data science course after you complete your schooling, please note you have to satisfy certain eligibility criteria. These include:

  • A diploma, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in one of the data science-related fields like math, computer science, statistics, engineering and the like; after schooling; you can most likely get a diploma degree in data science, as you wouldn’t have completed your graduation by then
  • You have to get at least 50% in your bachelor’s degree to be eligible to pursue a data science course; reputed institutes like the IIT and IIM require their candidates to score at least 60% in their bachelor’s degree to get into their data science courses
  • For certification courses in data science, you should have completed your schooling with at least 50% marks in your twelfth; basic knowledge of fundamental concepts of math, computer science and statistics is preferred
  • For diploma courses in data science, bachelor degrees like B.Tech, B.E, MCA, B.Sc, or related degrees with at least 50% aggregate in the main subjects like math, computer science and statistics
  • For a bachelor’s degree that has data science as one of the subjects, you should have completed twelfth standard from a reputed board (State Board, CBSE, etc.), and you should have taken math, computer science, or statistics as your major subjects in high school
  • For a master’s degree that has data science as one of the subjects, you should have completed a bachelor’s degree in math, statistics, computer science, information technology, or other related fields from a reputed university; you should have scored at least 50% in your graduate degree
  • For a doctorate in data science, you should have scored at least 55% in your master’s degree; the more your marks, the higher your chances you have to do a doctorate in this popular field!

Entrance exams you have to clear for a data science course after 12th

To pursue a degree in data science as one of the subjects like B.Tech, BCA, MCA, ME and M.Tech, these are the entrance exams you have to clear as a first step:

  • Jain Entrance Test – for B.Tech, BCA and MCA
  • BITS HD – for ME
  • Gate – for M.Tech

You have to keep looking out for the announcements on these entrance exams on the internet, and prepare accordingly to be eligible for a data science course.

You also have to clear the CET (Common Entrance Test) conducted at the university level to study data science. If you do this course, you have a very high chance of becoming a data scientist and bagging a lucrative job in one of the big global companies.

This course will definitely teach you the basic concepts of math, computer science and statistics needed for data science in more detail than the training or certification courses you might find online. This is a 3-year course, and you will get to learn all about data visualization tools, data analysis tools, programming languages like Python &R, querying languages like SQL, math concepts of linear algebra & calculus and statistical concepts of probability distribution, hypothesis testing and regression analysis in these topics.

You have to satisfy the following criteria to study B.Sc. Data Science:

  • Completed 12th from a recognized board with science as the main stream (math, physics & chemistry should be mandatory, while studying computer science is preferred)
  • Should have completed 17 years of age
  • Should have scored at least 50% in your 12th boards to pursue a bachelor’s degree in data science

Exams conducted for B.Sc. Data Science Aspirants

You have to clear the university-level entrance exams to study data science as your major subject. Most universities accept the marks you score in the CET (Common Entrance Test), but some colleges (private mostly) require you to clear their specific entrance exams to see if you are eligible to study B.Sc. Data Science in their college or not.
